Turtle World:
Turtle World first evolved in the early 1980's
when we needed a name to describe our
hobby of keeping reptiles, especially turtles.
Since
our animals were not only local but
native to other areas around the world "TURTLE WORLD" just seemed
right! So a logo
was designed and copyrighted and "TURTLE WORLD" was born! We began
doing
educational programs for local parks and community events on reptiles.
As time
progressed so did our programs. We incorporated many
things into our programs; began
doing educational displays; and the number of both began to increase.
We continue to try and improve each program and display. (our
mission)
In keeping with our love of animals we strive to limit the stress on them
and keep them as well a our audiences safe from any harm. We
firmly believe that no living creature can "own" another; they can only own
the responsibility of their well being and safety. Turtle World
always was and continues to be, a family operated hobby!
Many of our animal friends have been adopted in from either mistreating care
givers; people who no longer could care for them; and/or confiscations by
other agencies. Just as no child should be derived the
opportunity to experience the out-of-doors, no animal should be in a place
where they are no longer wanted. We will always strive to
either make or find a quality and loving home for any animal that is no
longer wanted. Everyone in our family is involved some how and
all share in the love of the animals, nature and the outdoors.
In fact, many of our programs turn into family vacations!
How often does a family get to take a vacation WITH their pets!!
Once you see one of our shows or displays, all of this will become very
visible.
The
Family:

Sam
is usually the one doing
programs. With a gift to gab and a
"God given
talent" to work with animals, things just come natural to him.
He enjoys the outdoors and all it has to offer. Activities
include but are by far not limited to: Camping; hiking; Boy Scouting;
Girl Scouting; rock climbing; canoeing, rafting and boating; hunting and
fishing; primitive skills; volleyball; and anything that will permit him to
be outdoors. Sam is also a founding member of the
Eastern Lycoming YMCA board of directors and served on the
Muncy Borough
Council. Sam with the help of a few other adults in his
community, started up the Muncy Boy Scout Troop 25 and is proud of its
scouts and level of activity it demonstrates today. He believes that you get out of something what
you put into it. This applies to his animals - he cares for them
and works with them and in return they make his programs and shows so much
better. He has great pride in his
family history, his family and just as
importantly, the animals he cares for. It is of his
opinion that one living creature can not "own" another.
They only own the responsibility to care for the ones put under their
charge.
Beth
is the one who spoils everyone (including Sam!).
She is often the person behind the scenes. She has many of the
tortoises and iguana's so spoiled that they run to the enclosure door when
she walks in just to see what for treat she may have! She
also cooks for the animals! Yep that's right she bakes
high quality and nutritious treats for the animals and despite what Sam may
tell you she cooks treats for him too! She
is also the one who cleans up the messes made when we clean up the messes!
Jaws (our American alligator) is about the only one that doesn't get along
with Beth. But then there are not too many that he does
get along with! Beth is the boss of the
Lazy B Rabbit-tree and Chinchila Ranch.
The chins are her babies and she spends hours just talking to them (Sam gets
jealous!). She also helps cleaning, caring and with
veterinary chores and so much more. Between the house, the
kids, and the critters, she never runs out of things to keep her busy!
She is picked on constantly by Sam and his buddies but all out of love and
appreciation! She does so much but most of all she keeps
Sam in line!
The Kids
get involved too. They understand the "dos and
don'ts" and pitch in when needed. When ever there is
assistance needed they are there to do what ever needs to be done.
Only two of them left at home and Sam and Beth will be lost when the
youngest one goes off to college ( have several years to go yet!) and are left to
fend for ourselves!
The youngest at home is Ali.
She can tell you what each
reptile is, as well as name most of the dinosaurs! She is a
real kick to take to reptile shows, as she will go from table to table pointing
out her favorite species! She may spend hours
hand feeding the tortoises on a nice day! She
helps by taking care of her critters responsibly and thus less chores for
everyone else!
Tamal is the house hold
work horse. When ever there is help that requires
muscles, he is paged into duty! He is also the artist of
the family. If it wasn't for him we couldn't draw a
straight line with a ruler. We hope to have some of his
fantastic artistry on the site some day! He has done poster art
for Our Town 2010 campaign, artwork for several other projects as well.
He truely has been given a talent that most of us can only sit back and awe. He has
graduated High School now and has already started
attending college - they grow up fast!
Jessie
graduated from Bloomsburg
University at the top of her class. She married a
wonderful guy and is a teacher in a local school district and is beginning a
family of her own in the very house she was brought up in! She spent hours watching the booths and filing
Sam's stack of "stuff" so he could find them again!
She is a smart cookie and she and her husband have the kindest of hearts.
They are both involved with a local fire company as well as many other
activities. And of course with a baby ... they will
continue to stay busy!!!
Joshua helped in babysitting our displays as well and ... well if you are reading
this, than it is because of Josh! He is the computer
whiz. He designs web pages and teaches web page
design classes. His is in charge of the
computer system for a fairly large school district and has a home of his own
that keeps him busy (and poor no doubt!). Sam drives him crazy with the continuous
barrage of "how do I get this to work?". So if
something on this site isn't working; it isn't his fault, it just means he
hasn't fixed what ever Sam screwed up yet!
Joshua and Jessie are also in our promotional video.
Zabrina graduated from Bucknell
University with honors. She and her family have purchased a
home and they both work for a large hospital organization. They
stay busy camping, cycling and of course maintaining their new home!
Tilaka is out on
her raising
a wonderful family and providing us with grandchildren to fuss over!
She has gone back to college, works full time and still manages to keep up
her house and care for three little ones!
Slowly all
our kids are striking out on their own. We look forward to
the day when we can retire and play with our animals and let all the kids
support us!! We
are proud of all the kids and appreciate what they do for us and our cause.
Sam's parents
play a big roll in TURTLE WORLD. His father had some
"reservations" about snakes but always supported Sam's adventures.
The result was he would help in the designing and building of the displays
and cages - that way he was certain none would be escaping!
Sam's mom was the one who finished painting after Sam had thought he was
finished! She would make sure everyone at our displays was
well fed and often would be watching over things while Sam took a break.
In our photo gallery you can see a photo of Sam's mother and his dog Aggie
watching things while Sam is off "playing". Into her
80's now Sam's mom still can be seen helping at the displays and set ups!
Sam's father has passed away but he lives in every thing Sam does.
Always treasure every moment you share with those you love.
Sam's
mom:
Beth's Dad:

Beth's parents
also get involved. We did a large Sports
Expo and Beth's father Jim "jumped" right in and gave a big helping hand!
Who say's you can't teach new dogs old tricks! Jim said he
"never thought he would be doing this!" Her parents
are always there to help in any way they can. Numerous times
they have taken care of Sam as he travels. They are two
wonderful people. You never get enough time to share with your
parents - even though it may be a lifetime!
Our "family"
goes beyond the immediate family.
We have friends that are
invaluable to us in all the do to help as well. From
assisting with display setups and breakdowns sometimes into the 2:00 -
3:00am hours; to baby sitting; to painting; to hauling to even finding ways
to make our displays more attractive and easier! You
name it they have "pitched in" at one time or another. You
may have many friends but you normally have only a few good friends-the kind
that are there for you when ever for whatever. We are
fortunate to have many.
It is absolutely adorable when Sam's Goddaughter Erin, would be assisting in tearing
down a set up. She would go right to town and is a real
worker - this was at the ages of three and four years old! She has been doing it as long as she has been
able to walk! We are grateful to all of
our friends
and yes they are and will always be, our family!!
It is our
mission to
provide an avenue for the general public to be able to learn about nature,
and the wonders it posses, through educational programs and displays.
We shall do all we can to find homes for unwanted animals and to educate the
public on keeping animals as pets. In so doing, we shall
promote captive breeding vs. taking from the wild and do what we can to
install a conservation message. We are pleased to add the
Lazy B Heritage Homestead to our credentials.

TURTLE WORLD
is truly a labor of love. A lot goes into
everything we do and we wouldn't have it any other way. So the next time you see a TURTLE WORLD display or program, realize the
number of people behind the scenes and be sure to thank whomever may be
there at that time, for it is definitely a family project!
